Here is a beautiful and complete early "Portable" Glass Jar Battery. During the early part of electric history these "Voltaic accumulators," as they were once called, played an important part in ushering in the success of electricity. This ingenious device made it possible to have the convenience of electricity in the most remote areas. Although a number of great innovators can be noted as having influenced the development of the accumulator storage cell, its inspiration in this millennium started with Count Alessandro Volta when he invented his famous "Voltaic Pile" in the year 1800. This glass battery is a cousin to the Voltaic pile and is extraordinary in that it has a very unique cover made of cast bronze which has a special hinged "trap door" sealing mechanism which locks shut with a thumb screw to seal the liquid electrolyte chemistry in the jar and keeps it from spilling during travel. Remarkably, this exceptional example still contains the purple and green crystal sediment of its original electrolyte chemistry, and it contains a zinc rod and the 2 carbon oxide plates which are still in beautiful condition. It stands 7.0 tall, is 3.25 inches in diameter and made of heavy glass. This wonderful glass battery was the electric source for the Otto Fleming Medical Quack Box and is a valued collectable for early medical device collectors, early bottle collectors and for early electric collectors as well.
